For the first time, recommendations written by The American Dietetic Association (ADA) are being used by a major insurance company to guide medical policy for coverage of medical nutrition therapy (MNT). Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA) is using MNT protocols presented in 2 publications developed and published jointly by ADA and Morrison Health Care, Inc - Medical Nutrition Therapy Across the Continuum of Care and Medical Nutrition Therapy Across the Continuum of Care: Supplement 1 - as the foundation for new and expanded MNT coverage.
The new BCBSMA clinical recommendations for MNT authorize 2 to 8 visits per year with a registered dietitian for adults with the following conditions: anorexia and bulimia nervosa, congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, enteral feeding support, gestational diabetes, high-risk prenatal care, human immunodeficiency virus or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), hyperemesis gravidarum, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, irritable bowel syndrome, oncology (medical …
