With 3 million subscribers and counting, U.S. sat-caster DirecTV is starting to think big. Very big. DirecTV has become the first domestic direct broadcast satellite TV provider to take the plunge into original series programming with a pay-per-view twist.

Hughes Electronics-owned DirecTV has struck a deal with Action Adventure Network (AAN), a new production entity comprising Telescene Film Group, Richmel Prods. and Goodman/Rosen Prods., to produce original telefilms and series to be offered exclusively by DirecTV as pay-per-view titles. And while many may question the ultimate success of the deal, few can deny it reflects the burgeoning opportunity satcasters offer the TV production community.
