Gerhart Niemeyer died on 23 June 1997. He was, for four decades, a defining presence in the Department of Government at Notre Dame, as well as a valued friend and frequent contributor to this journal.
Niemeyer was born in Essen, Germany, and was educated at the University of Kiel and at Cambridge. He left Germany in 1933 and, after a brief period spent teaching in Spain, he came to the United States, teaching first at Princeton and later at Ogelthorpe University in Georgia.
