Thirteen orthopedic physicians have merged their practices to create St. Louis Orthopedic Institute Inc., one of the largest orthopedic groups in the St. Louis area.

The merger, effective Jan. 1, allows the physicians to offer a broader scope of services and cover a wider geographic area than their individual practices could accommodate, according to Dr. Richard Tucker, one of the leaders behind the merger.

It also is expected to cut costs and make the practices more attractive to managed health care companies, he said.

The new group is made up of nine physicians from the group formerly called St. Louis Orthopedic Institute Inc., two doctors from St. Louis …
