The Life Technologies Foundation announced that it has awarded $2 million to three grant recipients working to advance science, including the University of North Texas for DNA-PROKIDS, the New York Academy of Sciences and the Science Museum in London (see also Life Technologies Foundation).

Funding efforts as varied as preventing human trafficking in developing counties, training doctors on new technologies and helping the public understand the importance of genetics, these grants support the Foundation's goals of accelerating scientific discovery and increasing awareness of scientific achievements.

"We are proud to support these innovative organizations that advance scientific understanding," said Greg Lucier, Chairman and CEO of Life Technologies. "The grantees we have chosen are working to demystify science to the public by providing training and access for using biology to make life even better."

The Life Technologies Foundation is a non-profit arm of Life Technologies Corporation (NASDAQ:LIFE), a global biotechnology tools company dedicated to improving the human condition. DNA-PROKIDS is an international project aimed at fighting against human trafficking through the use of DNA to help unite children with their families. The program is focused on developing a new DNA collection kit that can be easily distributed in developing countries. It will also be used to establish a DNA database to unite lost children with their parents and help countries understand how DNA sequencing can be used to solve crimes.

Dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge and increasing society's understanding of science, the New York Academy of Sciences is receiving a grant to train medical students and doctors in using genomics to better understand health and disease. This training will be conducted via on-line and in class curricula, and will also educate current and future doctors on the use of computerized patient records.
