The Brits are two steps ahead of the States when it comes to digital radio and a step behind on digital TV.
UK Communications Minister Lord Carter this week confirmed that the likely and hoped-for switchoff date for analog radio such as FM and MW (AM in the States) is 2015. After that it's all digital radio, called DAB for Digital Audio Broadcasting.
The US this month made the complete switch from analog to digital TV broadcasts but the UK's switchover is being done by geographic regions and won't be complete until 2012. (Despite the fears of many, the US switchover did not result in a catastrophe of Armageddon proportions.)
Digital radio, known as HD radio in the US, has had a problem getting traction in the States. Possible reasons are satellite radio's availability, consumer confusion that there's a fee for HD radio, the lack of affordable HD radios, the failure of carmakers to pre-install HD radio in new vehicles, the fact that the very popular talk radio is mostly on AM (MW) or that there are simply not enough "must-listen-to" HD stations.
The Digital Britain report, which Lord Carter oversaw, calls for all of Britain's national radio stations and most local stations to stop broadcasting analog signals by the end of 2015 and transmit only in DAB.
