We don't make many mistakes but we did last week in listing the studios that are participating in the $100 million Epix venture to offer free HD movies over the Net. They are:
- Viacom's Paramount Pictures
- Sony-controlled MGM
- Lionsgate
Epix is a two-part service: a TV channel that it wants pay-TV networks to carry and an online movie service at EpixHD.com.
It will offer recent and "classic" full-length films plus custom-made serials.
Some have likened the venture to a Hulu.com for movies but there are differences, particularly as to the pay-TV services being involved. Epix is willing to require the subscriber to have the pay-TV service's broadband but wants participating pay-TV services to carry the Epix TV channel.
