- 2 Mbps Now, 3.6 Mbps in July, 10 V in 2010
Eutelsat, which says it's Europe's leading satellite broadband operator, said it welcomes the UK government's Digital Britain report because its existing satellite broadband technology can provide 2 Mbps broadband service to all UK residents by 2012.
Eutelsat multimedia director Arduino Patacchini said the company's Tooway consumer broadband service, launched April 30 in the UK, is available now with a suggested retail price of [pounds sterling]29.99 ($45) per month.
Starting July 1, he said, the speed would be increased to 3.6 Mbps at no added cost. A 10 Mbps service is expected in 2010.
"In line with the UK government's commitment on Next Generation broadband availability we have already invested in a new satellite infrastructure, which will be available later in 2010 and deliver speeds up to 10 Mbps," he said.
He said his company "extends an invitation to further discussions on how the 10% of the population without access to broadband can be connected quickly."
Tooway, the company says, is the first satellite two-way broadband service offering speeds and costs similar to the ADSL broadband that telcos offer over their copper wire networks.
