Kasey Kahne led the final 33 laps, with Tony Stewart filling his mirrors the whole way, to win a crazy road race at the Toyota/Save Mart 350 in Sonoma, Calif. It was Kahne's first Sprint Cup road-course win. His previous best Sonoma finish was 23rd. His best finish at NASCAR's other road course, Watkins Glen, was 14th last August.
The win marked redemption for Richard Petty Motorsports, which merged with Gillett-Evernham Motorsports earlier this year just to stay in business. It was Richard Petty's first win as a team owner in a decade.
"Everything fell together, the car was good, the crew was good, it was one of those picture-perfect days, Petty said.
Two other Petty cars finished the race in the top 10. Kahne qualified fifth in his Dodge. Brian Vickers took the pole, his ninth in Cup competition. Kyle Busch was second, Australian road-course specialist Marcos Ambrose was third, and Tony Stewart was fourth. Only Kahne and Stewart stayed at the front throughout the race.
