SPAIN: Development Minister Jose Blanco and President of the Madrid regional government Esperanza Aguirre unveiled a 2009-15 investment plan on May 20 that will see spending of [euro]5bn to improve suburban services in the Spanish capital. This includes 115 km of new lines and 25 new stations.
The major new construction project is a [euro]1.3bn cross-city route connecting Alcala de Henares in the east with the southwestern suburbs. Rather than adding to growing congestion at Chamartin and Atocha, the new route would run via Canillejas, Avenida de America, Alonso Martinez and Principe Pio, providing interchange with the metro network.
Extension projects to the north of Madrid include a 19.7 km line with five stations from Alcobendas to San Agustin de Guadalix and a 5.4 km branch to Algete costing [euro] 430m in total.
