"Triglycerides often have been ignored for several reasons. First, since blood triglyceride levels are often inversely related to the level of blood HDLC ('good' cholesterol) levels, and low HDLC is a well established cardiovascular risk factor, it has never been, and still remains unclear whether the cardiovascular risk associated with high serum triglycerides is due to the triglycerides themselves or the low HDLC. Second, pharmacologic therapies that lower triglycerides tend to raise HDLC as effectively, thus continuing to focus attention on HDLC raising rather than triglyceride lowering.
