Jun. 30--WEST PALM BEACH -- Domingo Ortiz skipped out on his $300,000 bond in 2007, the day his trial was to begin on charges of having sex with a child under 12. The decision cost both Ortiz, who posted his homes as collateral, and taxpayers. Ortiz required a Mam interpreter, who was flown from California. Mam is a Mayan language with several dialects spoken in certain regions of Guatemala. The 15th Judicial Circuit -- which covers Palm Beach County -- hopes to avoid such costly incidents in the future with the purchase of remote interpreting equipment, which would allow interpreters to do their jobs without having to be in the courtroom.
