Founded in 1944, the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) is the world's premier professional association in the field of workplace learning and performance. Its membership includes more than 64,000 people in organizations from every level of the field of workplace performance in over 100 countries.

The Society's 1997 International Conference and Exposition in Washington, DC in May was the largest ever, with more than 13,000 participants, 500 exhibitors and 100 media representatives from over 80 countries.

The conference featured in excess of 250 sessions, which were designed around five key areas: workplace issues, performance improvement, technology applications, change management, and career strategies. It also offered informal opportunities for learning and networking through peer exchange discussions, previews of the latest films and videos, author discussions and book signings at the ASTD store, company tours, social events and other activities sponsored by ASTD's special interest forums. …
