Some centers blame stiffer Public Assistance rules for drops

DOWNTOWN - Enrollment capacity at licensed day care centers in the region is up compared to last year, due chiefly to expansion by the new list leader, the YMCA of Pittsburgh.

The Y added two more locations to bring its total to 41 and can now accommodate 2,500 youngsters.

The question is: Will demand follow supply? The new slots have been slow to fill; occupancy is currently a mere 62 percent.

The Y is one of 10 companies on the list below the 75 percent occupancy mark.
