Exposure to song lyrics that describe degrading sex--sex marked by a power imbalance between partners and a lack of mutual consent--was a powerful predictor of sexual experience in a sample of ninth graders surveyed in Pittsburgh in 2006-2007. (1) On average, the 711 respondents reported spending 15 hours each week listening to music by artists whose lyrics, according to results of content analysis, describe degrading sex. Experience with intercourse (reported by 30% of teenagers) was significantly more common among those who reported the greatest exposure to songs about degrading sex than among those reporting the lowest exposure (odds ratio, 2.1).
