Father: Mario Andretti
Son: Michael Andretti
Earnhardts, Foyts, Pettys, Rahals, Unsers-father-son tandems are as familiar in auto racing as grid girls. Perhaps none can make a stronger case for being the First Family of American Racing than the Andrettis.
In 2000, the Associated Press named Mario Andretti the Driver of the Century. He has won races and championships in sprint cars, stock cars and Formula One and at Daytona, Indianapolis and Monza. He and his son Michael rank second and third in IndyCar wins. Consider Mario's twin brother, Aldo, Aldo's son John and Mario's second son, Jeff, and we might be talking about racing's royal family.
Mario and Michael had similar skills but couldn't be more different. Mario was celebra-tory in victory; he loves the racing lifestyle and was ready to drive anything with wheels. Michael focused on Indy cars, save for a short stint in F1. He was outwardly more subdued than his father, at times almost dour and usually more intense. He seems happier at races as an IRL team owner than he did as a driver.
