"To win in the future may not be so easy.
So said Peugeot Sport team manager Serge Saulnier after the French manufacturer squandered a clear chance to win last year's 24 Hours of Le Mans. He knew that Audi was hard at work on a new car, and he anticipated correctly that the Peugeot 908 HDi's performance advantage would evaporate in 2009. However, he is far from writing off Peugeot's chances in the race June 13-14.
"We feel more ready to win than last year, Saulnier told AutoWeek ahead of the famous endurance test. "In retrospect, we had some weaknesses in every area in 2008.
Peugeot fell short of Audi both tactically and technically. A superlative performance from the superteam of Allan McNish, Tom Kristensen and Rinaldo Capello pressured the faster Peugeots. Overheating problems and a traction-control system that could not match Audi's in the rain left the best 908 in second place.
Peugeot has addressed the overheating issue and worked hard on its traction control over the second half of last season. More important, the in-house Peugeot team appears to be a better prepared than it was at this time last year.
"We are much more fluid in the pits this year, said driver Nicolas Minassian, who codrives with former Formula One pilots Christian Klien and Pedro Lamy. "We were a match for Audi at Sebring [this year].
