At the midway point of the World Rally Championship season, Sebastien Loeb leads the driv-ers' standings for Citroen, 17 points ahead of Ford's Mikko Hirvonen. Citroen leads Ford by 29 points in the manufacturers' rankings. > The WRC features just 12 rounds this year, meaning that every result is relatively significant, with five story lines characterizing the season to date.
FIVE IN A ROW
After Loeb, 35, won the year's first five rallies, people began to ask whether he could win all 12. One leading European bookmaker set the odds at 8:1; Loeb rated his prospects as "extremely slim. Sure enough, on the most recent rally, in Sardinia (Compe-tition, June 1), a broken tire valve and a time penalty resulted in a fourth-place finish. The win streak was over, but the championship domination certainly wasn't.
"Actually, I feel quite relieved, Loeb said afterward. "At least now, people won't keep on asking me if I can win all the rallies anymore.
ZERO TO HERO
Ford driver Jari-Matti Latvala became the youngest driver (22) to win a WRC event when he triumphed in Sweden last year. This season, he aimed to mount a consistent title challenge. But the only consistent challenge he posed at the start of the year was for Ford's mechanics, who had to repair a string of accidentsincluding a frightening one in Portugal in which his car rolled 17 times and Latvala thought he would die.
