Top Fuel rookie Spencer Massey won his first national event, the United Association NHRA nationals, on June 7 at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill. Runner-up Antron Brown regained the points lead for the third time this year.
Massey, the reigning IHRA world champion who was hired by drag-racing legend Don "The Snake Prudhomme in the off-season, had some decorated company in the winner's circle, as two-time Funny Car champ Tony Pedregon and four-time and reigning Pro Stock champ Jeg Coughlin Jr. also won at the 10th of 24 events this year.
The Top Fuel final was a thriller, with both dragsters side-by-side all the way down the 1,000-foot course. The difference came in the last few hundred feet, where Massey was able to pull ahead to win by 0.020 second.
