In a saga that promises to get uglier, NASCAR countersued suspended owner-driver Jeremy Mayfield (Competition, May 18) on June 5, accusing him of violating its substance-abuse policy, breach of contract and defrauding competitors.
The suit says that Mayfield knowingly used drugs in violation of the sport's substance-abuse policy "and in doing so, violated his contract with NASCAR and the standards of care for other drivers, said NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston. "He competed in a number of races thathad we known he'd been on the medication he was on and had we known there were illegal substances involvedwe wouldn't have allowed him to compete.
