I wonder if the world remembers that in 1959, the southern Oregon coast, Coos and Curry counties, became the "Banana Belt" of Oregon. I remember because it was also the summer I shook John F. Kennedy's hand and showed thousands of tourists a fifty-two-pound striped bass in a deep freezer. Nineteen fifty-nine was the year of the Oregon Statehood Centennial, and I was a twenty-year-old University of Oregon college student looking for a summer job. A graduate of Coos Bay's Marshfield High School, I was hired along with two other south coast girls to work the Coos-Curry booth at the 100-day Centennial Exposition in Portland.
