Demand outpaced supply for system administrators and networking professionals last year, causing salaries for these specialists to grow an average of about 14 percent, according to a recent survey by the CIO Institute.

"This particular area has no supply system," says Alan Paller, director of education and research at the CIO Institute, in Bethesda, Md. "This is a field that trains its own."
