Although the forthcoming Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 features enhancements aimed at the enterprise, the database's restriction to the Windows NT platform will prevent it from being a serious contender for large corporate bids anytime soon, users and industry insiders said.

In addition, Microsoft will continue to face stiff competition from rivals such as Oracle, which is set to ship the next version of its parallel server database, Oracle8 Parallel Server for NT, in March.

Now in a second beta release, SQL Server 7.0 is set for general release about midyear, following two years of development.
