Behind the Handshake
Jaguar calls the four dash vents that rotate open when the engine starts in the new XF a "surprise and delight'' feature, part of the "Jaguar handshake.'' A Jag rep confirmed that there is no functional purpose to the rotating vents. For a former Jaguar owner like me, watching them evokes the jokes about Lucas electrical systems. How long until an electrical gremlin appears and the rotating vents stop rotating?
Possibly never, given the attention we know Jag has paid to improving reliability. No, the importance of the Jaguar handshake lies in what it tells us about the reasons so much effort in design, engineering and manufacturing were focused on the interior-and not just to make it luxurious. Because so many cars in the XF's segment deliver driving experiences more rather than less similar to one another, making the internal environment different has gained even more importance for carmakers. Short of swapping the steering wheel for a side-stick controller, this presents a serious challenge to designers, what with all of the comfort, convenience, communication and navigation equipment that must be built in as part of the baseline for the XF's class. ...
