BMW confirms X1 plans
BMW plans to build the new X1 small sport/utility vehicle alongside the 1 Series and the 3 Series at its plant in Leipzig, Germany. The X1 is based on the 1 Series and will share some parts with the 3 Series. It's due in 2010 and will be smaller than the Mercedes-Benz B-Class.
An earlier decision made by BMW chairman Norbert Reithofer will see production of the second-generation X3 due in 2009 shift from Magna in Austria to BMW's plant in South Carolina. The free capacity at Magna will be used for production of the Mini Crossman, due for unveiling in concept form at October's Paris motor show.
