Kasey Kahne got lucky when he was voted into NASCAR's previous event, the All-Star Challenge at Lowe's Motor Speedway (Competition, May 26). He and crew chief Kenny Francis gambled on a late-race, no- service pit stop that helped deliver the win and $1 million. Eight nights later, they got lucky and hit the jackpot again at the same track.
This time, runaway leader Tony Stewart had a flat right front tire and brushed the turn-one wall within sight of his first Coca-Cola 600 win. Suddenly, with about four miles left, Kahne went from being a satisfied runner-up to being a disbelieving winner. The unexpected triumph was his first in a points-paying event since October 2006 at Lowe's, a career-worst slump of 52 races.
"Luck was on our side this week and last week,'' said Kahne, who drives Gillett Evernham Motorsports' No. 9 Dodge. "It's pretty awesome to be on this side of things. I thought Tony was out of gas. At that point, I just couldn't believe it. I was thinking second [place was good] until I saw him slow up. But we were there all night. We put our Dodge where it needed to be. We had a first- or second-place car at the end, and Tony had a first- or second-place car . . . but then had a problem. It's great when luck's on your side.''
