Graham Rahal was left standing in the qualifying line at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and he wasn't happy about it, as he hoped to bump his way back into the group of 11 drivers who earned provisional starting positions for the 92nd Indianapolis 500.
But his Newman/Haas/ Lanigan Racing team didn't have a new set of tires ready for a last-minute opportunity created when Luczo Dragon Racing withdrew Tomas Scheckter's car, which then requalified and actually lowered the bubble speed to a reachable number.
"It makes me mad, because I feel we could have made it,'' said Rahal, the 19-year-old son of three-time CART champion and 1986 Indy 500 winner Bobby Rahal. "It's basically like shooting yourself in the foot.
"You need to be prepared for any situation, even if it doesn't look realistic that it can happen. You need to be there, you need to have your stuff there, you need to be ready to go, and we weren't.''
Rahal, who won his first IndyCar Series race last month on the street course in St. Petersburg, Florida, had the best chance of the former Champ Car World Series drivers to land a spot on the first day of qualifying.
