Apart from visiting appointments at the Universities of Texas and Mississippi, Dick Beardsmore spent his entire career in the University of Wales where he was first an undergraduate and then a postgraduate. He was a product of Welsh Wittgensteinianism. His Master's thesis became his first book, Moral Reasoning, a remarkable achievement on any account for a young man in his mid-twenties. After a one-year appointment at Lampeter, he moved to Bangor and then, on the demise of that department, to Swansea where he made a great success of the unenviable job of head of department.
