THE economic slowdown does not deter small and medium enterprises (SMEs) from spending on information technology (IT) to sustain their business, according to an IBM study.

A survey done on local SMEs last year found that IT expenditure by three quarters of respondents remained unchanged despite the economic situation.

The study, which covered 80 mid-size companies in Malaysia, showed that a quarter of the respondents increased their IT expenditure, while about two-fifths maintained their IT spending but re-allocated the targeted areas.

About a quarter said they had reduced IT spending in view of the economic condition.
