ZAMBOANGA CITY - The death of two bandit leaders in Basilan was a "big blow" to the operation of kidnap-for-ransom groups in Mindanao's southwestern areas, a high-ranking military official said yesterday.

On Wednesday, military troops stormed a jungle hideout in a remote town of Basilan, killing Usman Lidjal and Ben Mungkay, both tagged as key personalities in a string of abductions in the region.

The raid also killed eight other bandits and captured three others. A junior military officer died during the siege.
