The `enigma' of the letter of James and the quest of the historical James are still with us as problems to be investigated. A welcome is accorded to this latest treatment of the New Testament document that bears his name; and more so since it seeks to throw light on the larger task of understanding and interpreting the rise and development of nascent Christianity (p. 32). There is therefore a wider agenda the author proposes than is at first apparent.
