I was at the Berlin Hilton when I decided to conduct an experiment, and divided the hotel bill (which was in euros) into three equal parts, paying 194.39 [euro] on each card. I used an RBS Mastercard, an HHonorsVisa and an Amex Blue credit card. The sterling bills were surprisingly different. RBS Mastercard was 163.54 [pounds sterling] ($263.79--exchange rate was 1.1886). HHonorsVisa [a Barclaycard] was 155.54 [pounds sterling] ($231.86) plus a foreign exchange fee of 4.28 [pounds sterling] ($6.38), making a total of 159.82 [pounds sterling] ($238.33--overall exchange rate was 1.2163). My Amex bill was 158.52 [pounds sterling] ($236.37--exchange rate 1.2263). I think this shows a significant difference in the exchange rates, that we never see, with a subsequent significant difference in our sterling bills.
