Many professors do not feel responsible for graduate student attrition, according to research presented at the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association in San Diego in April.

Dr. Susan Gardner, assistant professor of higher ed at the University of Maine, interviewed 60 doctoral students and 34 professors in six different departments of one university, departments whose PhD completion rates ranged from 17% to more than 75%. She found faculty blame students for leaving, but students cite other factors.
