In past tests, we've found that opting for a manual transmission over an automatic can save you 1 to 2 mpg with the same make and model.
Fuel mileage for the automatic-equipped Toyota Corolla we tested in July was as good as some smaller subcompacts. This month, we tested a Corolla with a five-speed manual to see if it could beat that.
But the manual Corolla doesn't save fuel over the automatic. Both get the same 32 mpg overall. That's still better than any conventionally powered car except for manual versions of the Honda Fit and Toyota Yaris. Some hybrids and diesels get better fuel economy but cost more.
