For this report, we tested new handheld and stick vacuums and compared them with the best previously tested models. The results? New top performers in both categories.
The corded A1 Bissell has a boomerang-shaped head that fits into corners and edges better than almost every other stick vac we tested. Consider it for quick cleanup of bare floors. Yet it's not an option for carpets since it lacks a brush.
A cordless model, the A2 Black & Decker, cleaned carpets better than any other stick vacuum we tested. It folds for versatility. But like other cordless models, it has a short run time.
The A3 Hoover and A4 Dirt Devil were great on pet hair and on bare floors. They both earned recommendations in our most-recent small vacuums report (October 2008) because of their low price.
