Although none of the 13 packaged chocolate-chip cookies our trained sensory panelists recently tested will pass for homemade, some taste far better than others. The Ratings can help you avoid wasting "indulgence" calories you've saved up on cookies that are dry or bland.

The Health Valley and Keebler cookies taste best. Both are tender, with more chocolate flavor than most. Health Valley is slightly buttery; Keebler is a little like shortbread and costs less than half as much as Health Valley: 22 cents per serving.
The Great Value (Walmart) cookies are decent overall and just 7 cents per serving. They taste toasted and consist of more cookie than chocolate.
Cost per serving is based on price paid for packages ranging in size from 7 ounces (Archer Farms) to 18 ounces (Keebler and Trader Joe's). Nutrition information is from labels.
There's no taste advantage to buying organic. The three cookies labeled organic--Health Valley, Newman's Own, and Archer Farms--varied widely in quality. And the only cookie claimed to be free of wheat and gluten was the lowest rated.
