Byline: KATE SULLIVAN
As a model in the 1990s, Carla Bruni wore outrageous clothes on the runwayand sometimes posed without them. As the First Lady of France, she is more reserved, with a wardrobe to match. But consider her version of reserved: She showed up to a garden party at the ElysA[c]e Palace, the official presidential residence, in a boxy jacketbut it was bright fuchsia. She favors rich blues for her most drop-dead evening gowns and manages to inject variety into basic black: baring her shoulders in a belted top, drawing eyes to her face with an oversize collar on a shift dress, or accenting serious jewelry with a scalloped neckline. Despite her remarkable propriety, Bruni-Sarkozy couldn't be dowdy if she tried.
Flat-Footed
Much has been made of the fact that Bruni-Sarkozy has rarely been seen in heels since exchanging vows with her shorter husband. The fashion sin of having to wear flats with a knee-length skirt pains some experts. But Bruni-Sarkozy manages to make flats sexy. Tiny bows, webbing, carefully designed cutoutsnot to mention spectacular metallic sandalsall surpass the average down-to-earth ballet slipper.
