Writing to Hans Kauffmann in berlin in 1961, Erwin Panofsky (1892-1968) describes a small event honoring Walter Friedlander in New York. he remarks, "Another nice aspect of the ceremony was that there were, so to speak, five generations of the history of art in evidence in the same room: the old man, who had been one of my teachers; I who had been the teacher of [Ludwig] Heydenreich; [Wolfgang] Lotz, who had been a student of Heydenreich; and a great number of young New York students who are still studying with both Lotz and Frielaender" (no. 2766).
