A partnership between a plastic surgeon and a software company has improved on an innovative procedure for performing mastectomies without leaving massive scarring.

The procedure, called PEG because of a circular incision central to the operation, results in normal-looking breasts for post-mastectomy patients, a vast improvement over the traditional operation which leaves long, horizontal scars.

The inventor, Danville plastic surgeon Dr. Edward Knowlton, had a hunch that the procedure could be perfected and taught to other surgeons if he could test it in a three-dimensional environment. That's where Kinetix, a division of San Rafael-based Autodesk Inc. comes in. …
