New venture learns to work with forwarders, railroads, but misses first targets of original business plan.

AMSTERDAM

NDX Intermodal, the joint venture of Deutsche Bahn (German railway), NS Cargo (Dutch railway) and CSX Corp., has learned a lot during its first six months of operation.

Launched in January amid much fanfare, NDX quickly introduced block-train container services on three corridors: Rotterdam/Antwerp, Rotterdam/Munich and Hamburg/Milan.

However, getting the cargo volumes during the first months proved harder.

"The first two months were difficult for us," said John B. Paladino, managing director of NDX, based in Amsterdam. …
