New law to clear minor criminal records after 10 years Those wanting a second chance may apply to the Department of Justice from tomorrow onwards for the erasure of their convictions Staff Writer A NEW law that came into effect yesterday allows those convicted of minor offences to have their criminal record expunged 10 years after their conviction.

The amendment to the Criminal Procedure Act gives a person a second chance at a clean record if he received a sentence such as correctional supervision, a suspended sentence, a fine of up to R20000, a postponed sentence or a caution or reprimand.
