OH, AND THE FIREBIRD IS DEAD, TOO
With General Motors' decision to kill off its venerable but underperforming Pontiac brand by the end of 2010, both the top-notch rear-drive G8 performance car from Down Under and the Solstice roadster will end up on GM's growing scrap heap. Neither model will be rebadged for use by another division, GM says. GM also is liquidating Hummer, Saab and Saturn by the end of this year and is looking at possibly off-loading its Euro-pean Opel brand to Fiat.
GM says the cuts will allow it to focus product development and marketing resources on four core brands: Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC.
CHRYSLER CONNECTION
Although Fiat is angling to take over Opel, that doesn't mean the resurgent Italian automaker's designs on a merger with Chrysler aren't still on the front burner. Late-breaking Chrysler agreements with its workers are paving the way for that deal to come to fruition at any moment.
MCLAREN RESURGENCE
McLaren is spinning off its road-car company and looking for $370 million worth of investment from outside investors to get its P11 family of Ferrari-chasing $150,000-plus supercars into production.
