All Grown Up; "09 Shanghai show wrests world stage from the West.(NEWS)

It's not the world's biggest auto show. That title still rests with the expansive spread that is Frankfurt's international exhibition. Nor does it yet directly affect North American auto enthusiasts in quite the same way as our own international show in Detroit. But in terms of game-changing significance, this year's Shanghai motor show will be remembered as the moment when the fledgling Chinese auto industry made its way onto the grown-up world automotive stage.
Most agree that Shanghai has now overtaken Tokyo as the most significant auto show within Asiasomething the Japanese will find hard to swallow but true. The world's carmakers seem only too aware of this. Porsche used China's largest city, population 20 million, as the backdrop for the unveiling of its first-ever four-door sedan, the Panamera. And General Motors chose Shanghai for the unveiling of the Buick PATAC, a multipurpose vehicle for the Asian market.
