Now we know why 50-year-old Mark Martin changed his mind, unretired and accepted Rick Hendrick's offer to drive one of his Chevrolets: to win the pole, lead 157 of 312 laps and easily win the Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix International Race-way on April 18.
It was Martin's first Cup victory since October 2005, at Kansas Speedway for Roush Fenway Racing. He was 0-for-36 for Roush Fenway Racing the next season, then 0-for-24 for Ginn Motorsports in 2007 and 0-for-24 for Dale Earnhardt Inc. last season. Determined not to go out like that, Martin jumped at Hendrick's offer to replace Casey Mears this year for perhaps his last shot at the Sprint Cup.
