The seven Formula One teams that started the season without a downforce-generating rear "double diffuser (Competition, April 6) are engaged in a race against time to ready modified cars after the FIA International Court of Appeal ruled on April 14 that the devices are legal.
Renault, Ferrari, Red Bull Racing and BMW Sauber all protested the diffusers used by Brawn GP, Williams-Toyota and Toyota. The court supported the race stewards' decisions in Australia and Malaysia that the devices are legal; therefore, the results of the first two raceswhich were held before the rulingstand.
Renault introduced a prototype diffuser on Fernando Alonso's car in China on April 19. Mean-while, McLaren-Mercedes, Ferrari and several other teams will debut their versions at round five, the Spanish Grand Prix on May 10.
