Byline: CURT CAVIN
A grumpy Scott Dixon was happy to see an oval track on the IndyCar Series schedule after enduring two difficult street circuits.
The reigning series champion used Kansas Speedway to score his first win of the season and his 17th career victory. Dixon held off Helio Castroneves to win the Road Runner Turbo Indy 300.
Dixon struggled at the races in St. Petersburg, Fla., and Long Beach, Calif., making contact with several drivers in each. He entered this race 17th in the points standings, but he now heads to the Indianapolis 500 as the defending series and Indy champion with momentum. His Kansas win vaulted him to fourth in points.
"Of course I was grumpy, Dixon said. "I wasn't winning.
Tony Kanaan finished third, with Ryan Briscoe fourth. They are now 1-2, respectively, in the standings. Danica Patrick was fifth.
The weather was as much the story as Dixon. A day after tornadoes ripped through the area and threatened to strike the track itself, thunderstorms loomed but never actually arrived. However, the wind was fierce, clocked at 30 mph in the race's early stages.
