Introduction
Selective serotonin (5-HT) reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are used as first-line drugs in the treatment of depression. However, only about one-third of depressed patients achieve remission within the first medication trial with an SSRI. (1) Different possibilities have been proposed to explain this lack of adequate response to SSRIs. Sustained administration of SSRIs elevates extracellular 5-HT levels, which leads to activation of 5-[HT.sub.1A] receptors on 5-HT neurons in the dorsal raphe nucleus and 5-[HT.sub.2A] receptors on postsynaptic neurons.
