A recent study in the Archives of Internal Medicine concludes what many in the natural health community have been saying for years--most Americans are severely deficient in vitamin D. To be exact, three in four Americans are not getting enough of the "sunshine vitamin," say the researchers. And while sunnier days are upon us, doctors are now suggesting that everyone take vitamin D supplements--in addition to getting a daily dose of sunshine.
"Even if you live in sunny climates, our misplaced sun-phobia has most of us slathering on sunscreen, blocking out the healthful rays, and adding more toxic chemicals into our bodies," says author and naturopath Sherrill Sellman, ND, who is profiled on p. 56. No one is advocating baking in the sun for hours on end, but it's looking more and more like a little sun every day is not just good for our health, but necessary. "Vitamin D is critical for immune support, cancer prevention, and treating depression and even Alzheimer's," says Sellman.
