In southern Belize, where tourism is in the formative stage, a program called the Maya Village Indigenous Experience has been developed to enable Mopan and Kekchi Maya villagers to participate in a small-scale tourism program without sacrificing their identity, dignity, or economic security. This program is intended to equip rural villagers, many of whom know little about tourism, with the experience and knowledge necessary to help control and benefit from this growing industry.
