(From Bristol Evening Post)
A pensioner from Portishead is considering calling for a parish poll to gauge opinion on controversial plans to install a skate park at a beauty spot in the town.
Michael Eames, 66, of Beach Road West, , says he may call for the special poll at the annual town council meeting.
The move comes after the Portishead Skatepark Project (PSP) announced plans to install a new GBP150,000 skate park on land between the boathouse and cafe at the Lake Grounds.
Mr Eames, a retired builder, says if he can get 10 other local residents to back his suggestion of a poll he will call for one to be held at the annual meeting of Portishead Town Council next Wednesday.
If the poll is ordered it will be carried out by North Somerset Council's electoral department and cost several thousand pounds. The results of such a poll are not legally binding, but will likely be factored in when the application for the skate park, due to be submitted later this year, is discussed.
The last time a parish poll was carried out in Portishead was in the 1960s when residents were asked whether they wanted a new open air pool or an indoor swimming facility in the town.
